All teachers know the school days between Thanksgiving and the Winter Break are difficult to fill. Students want to be engaged in the holiday fun, but teachers want activities to be educational. This year, you can do both! With these 12 Days of Christmas Lesson Plans students will be racing to school, excited for what each new day has to offer.
Here is a look at Day 4- Gingerbread Day (1-3)
As a class, you will read aloud a Gingerbread Man story and students will complete a story map. Then, you will read a second story and students will compare/contrast the two texts. Next, students can explore several writing options. They can respond to a choice of prompts, “Would you try to catch the Gingerbread man or let him run away?” Or, “How would you catch the Gingerbread Man?” As another choice, students can create their own version of a Gingerbread Man story. Also included is a fun scavenger hunt for students who want to try and catch the Gingerbread Man. (We are guessing all students will want to try and catch that crazy cookie!) After the scavenger hunt, you will return to class for math to play a “Guess My Number” place value game. Additional activities include “Roll-a-Gingerbread Man,” drawing the other half of gingerbread man to review symmetry, and decorating gingerbread houses or men.
Here is a look at Day 6- Santa Day (1-3)
The class will start the day by reading an informational text about Santa Claus around Europe. Students will stamp their passport and take notes as they “visit” each country and learn about the different Santas. Then, you will read ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas.’ Students will use evidence from the texts to complete a Santa Claus character trait graphic organizer. Once they are finished learning all about Santa, they will write him a letter and let him know what they would like for Christmas. A variety of differentiated “Roll and Color” number operations pages are included for Santa day math. You will end the day by singing songs about Santa Claus from the list of songs provided.
Here is a look at Day 6- Santa Day (4-6)
The day begins as students “travel” around the room to read by informational texts about different Santa Claus traditions around Europe. Students take notes on a passport and even add a stamp as they complete their “visit” each country. Next, you will read T’was the Night Before Christmas aloud to the class. Students will cite evidence from all of the texts to answer the question “What character traits does Santa possess?” Students will write an opinion or argumentative essay describing which character traits they think Santa has. They will be able to evaluate their own writing using an opinion writing checklist. We have included several differentiated “Roll and Color” pages for number operations math practice. The class will complete the day’s Santa activities by participating in a Santa charades sing along.
Here is a look at Day 11- Reindeer Day (1-3)
To start this day, you will pick a book about reindeer to read aloud to the class. Students will complete the story retelling graphic organizer about the text. Then, you (or the students) will read the included informational text about reindeer. Students will take notes and use the information to write their own informational text about reindeer using one of several writing page options. Students will also put reindeer names in ABC order and play one of the “Reindeer 4 in a Row ” math games. The class finishes up the day creating a reindeer craft made out of a cup.
Here is a look at Day 11- Reindeer Day (4-6)
To start this day, students will draw a reindeer. Then, you will read aloud a literature book about reindeer to the class. Students will complete a storyboard summary graphic organizer about the text. The day continues as students will read an informational text and take notes about reindeer. They will use their notes to write their own informational piece about reindeer. Students will also make a labeled diagram of a reindeer and revisit their initial reindeer drawing, making a second illustration and writing about what changes they made in comparison to their first drawing. Afterward, students will practicing math skills while playing one of the “Reindeer 4 in a Row ” games. The class finishes up the day creating a reindeer craft made out of a cup.
Here is a look at Day 2- Candy Cane Day (4-6)
This day begins as each student brings in a candy cane…the more unique the better! Students will read and compare two legends about candy canes, then discuss and write an opinion about which legend they feel is true. Students will use the candy cane they brought to do measurement graphing and conversions in math. Then, students make predictions about dissolving candy canes in a fun science experiment. You will lead the class in a candy cane exchange activity and the students will complete a stained glass candy cane craft. To finish off the day, students will learn how candy canes are made then write a 4-step instruction guide as summary of what they have learned.
We suggest showing this short, fact-filled video about how candy canes are made. Not only does it give several relevant steps that are perfect for student note taking, but it also reinforces which candy cane legend is true!

To prepare for each of the 12 days of Christmas lessons, you will need some type of container to store each day’s materials. We purchased 12 gift bags from our local dollar store. They were only 2 for $1 and you can staple or glue the daily labels onto the bags.
The read-aloud books are not included. Check out your local library, or most can be purchased online or in Scholastic’s book club orders. Of course, our book lists are just suggestions. You can also choose your own books that go along with the daily theme.
