Digital Sight Word Activities

What are Sight Words?

It is important to learn to read sight words quickly. Sight words are high frequency words that show up regularly in text. They are also often difficult for beginning readers to sound out phonetically. Therefore, the goal is to help young readers learn to recognize these words automatically and read them fluently without needing to sound the words out.

According to We Are Teachers, “Sight words are words, like come, does, or who, that don’t follow the rules of spelling or the six syllable types.” Because the words don’t  follow the traditional rules of spelling, these words can be difficult to sound out.

Create Confident Readers By Teaching Sight Words

Sight words also typically appear frequently in texts. Therefore, if we can teach our young readers, preschoolers, kindergarteners and first graders to immediately recognize and read these words, they can become confident readers.

You may have learned by now, that there is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach to teaching sight words. However, similarly to learning anything, practice makes perfect. The more students see, hear, and study sight words, the more familiar kids will be with them and the faster they will recognize them and learn to read them fluently. When teaching sight words, be sure to schedule a time to practice each day.

Finally, be sure to come up with fun sight words learning activities. After all, the more engaging the activity is, the more educational value students can get.
