Mindfulness in the Classroom

Have you heard the buzz about mindfulness & meditation in schools?  It seems everywhere we go, people are recommending mindfulness.

As teachers, we know the success of our students’ learning relies not only on providing academics, but also a safe emotional environment.

In our mindfulness series:

Practicing Mindfulness in the Classroom gives students permission to pause, breathe, and take a break during the busy school day.  By offering our students mindfulness practices, we can instill strategies to help them independently manage stress in a healthy way- which in turn helps them to succeed academically, socially, and emotionally.

We created a mindfulness program to provide you with engaging, fun, and thoughtful practices. Our program includes four mindful practices:

  • Mindful Breathing
  • Mindful Movements
  • Mindful Moments- Journaling
  • Mindful Communication

MINDFUL BREATHING

Mindful Breathing is one of the easiest ways to teach meditation. Breathing is a simple way to become aware of the body and mind by connecting with the inhale and exhale. Our program contains numerous types of breathing exercises that are simple enough for students of all ages to practice.

MINDFUL MOVEMENT

Mindful Movements allow students to become aware of their bodies through movement and breathing. Our program contains multiple series of themed mindful movements based on the yoga philosophy of mind, body, and breath connection.

MINDFUL MOMENTS- JOURNALING

Mindful Moments are a quiet time for kids to be still and become aware of their thoughts, emotions, and senses though journaling. This program contains several journal prompts that encourage self-reflection through mindfulness. These prompts can be used regularly throughout the year.

MINDFUL COMMUNICATION

Mindful Communication is a way for students to completely focus on the conversation, using body, heart, and mind.  Our program contains structured protocols that help kids practice being mindful during conversations.

What’s Included?

Each Mindful Practice Includes:

  • Projectable slides or posters
  • Teacher direction cards
  • Teacher reference book
  • Bulletin board displays
  • Instructional videos

Our Mindful Moments practice includes differentiated journal prompts for: affirmations, emotions, visualization, five senses, and free write/draw

Mindful Practices take a few short minutes and are meant to be used anytime during the school day or class period. The benefit of these practices is that they are adaptable to YOUR classroom! You may choose to implement Mindful Practices once a day or multiple times throughout the day. You may also establish a schedule, choose to have students suggest what they need through a choice board, or determine needs through your own intuition.
