Snakes. You either love them or hate them. Your first or second grade students probably have similar feelings! 

 

As a controversial member of the animal kingdom, these slithery creatures make an excellent topic for learning. Since many kids will already have an emotional connection to snakes it will be an easy topic to get them interested in for learning. 

 

Author Tedd Arnold definitely knew this would be an interesting topic for kids when he wrote Fly Guy Presents: Snakes. Both engaging and informative, this informational text is an excellent book to get students interested in reading nonfiction texts.

Nonfiction Reading Activities for Elementary School

When the Common Core began to put a spotlight on nonfiction texts it was a big shift for teachers. While there were definitely initial feelings of frustration as it took away from fun picture books, over the years teachers have come to see that nonfiction is an important part of the classroom. 

 

Moreover, many of us in education have learned that reading nonfiction texts with our kids does not have to be boring. Nonfiction reading activities can be just as fun and entertaining as traditional read aloud activities.

 

We know this for a fact because we tried it out when we were in the classroom. As former elementary teachers we tried and tested several reading activities over the years. 

 

Using our favorite children’s books as a starting point, we explored several learning activities that are both educational and fun for kids. With this knowledge, we created similar reading activities for nonfiction books. The same tried and true interactive activities that we have provided for you below!

As we mentioned earlier, snakes are not the only hot nonfiction topic that can be used for read alouds. There are several other fun nonfiction books for elementary students.
