Creepy Crayon Read Aloud

Did you hear?! There’s a new addition to the Creepy family! The three of us were so excited to get our hands on the latest book by Aaron Reynolds and Peter Brown. We have loved Creepy Carrots and Creepy Pair of Underwear for years, and we officially now love Creepy Crayon too.

Creepy Carrots and Creepy Pair of Underwear have been two of our favorite books for the fall. Moreover, two books that we loved creating read alouds for! So, we couldn’t wait to make a new read aloud for Creepy Crayon!

Are you ready to find out what’s included in your Creepy Crayon Read Aloud?! Keep reading!

Creepy Crayon Summary

Here is a quick overview if you haven’t had a chance to read this cute book yet. Just like the other two spooky books in this series, Creepy Crayon is a blend of humor with a little spook.

In this book, Jasper gets himself into a bit of a pickle with a crayon. In the beginning, Jasper is flunking art. However, when he comes across a perfect purple crayon everything begins to change.

First, the changes are for the best. Anytime Jasper has difficulty with something the crayon is there to help him out. However, it doesn’t take long before Jasper realizes the crayon is ALWAYS around! Moreover, the crayon is doing all of Jasper’s work.

While it seemed like a great friendship, in the beginning, Jasper soon learns that the Creepy Crayon is not the friend he needs.

In addition to the well-written story, the book follows the unique black-and-white art that this series is known for. Only the Creepy Crayon (like the Creepy Carrot and the Creepy Pair of Underwear) is in color! This book is truly a perfect pairing of storytelling through words and pictures to engage young students.

Creepy Carrots Read Aloud

As we mentioned earlier, Creepy Crayon follows a similar format as our read aloud for Creepy Carrot and the read aloud for Creepy Pair of Underwear.

Therefore, once you have taught your students the structure of one read aloud it is easy to use additional read alouds. Moreover, the more frequently you use any of our read aloud activities, the more your students can complete them as independent work.

The benefit of creating independent work is that it adds variety to your lessons, increased student engagement, and creates more time for you to engage with students.

Using three read alouds for a series is even more effective because students are already engaged with the first story. Therefore, they are typically more invested in learning what the other two stories are about. Meaning, they will be more likely to complete work independently.
