Creepy Pair of Underwear Lesson Plans

October is always a fun month to bring a bit of spookiness into the classroom. In a fun and kid friendly way, of course!

One of our favorite ways to invite a bit of fun and spookiness into elementary school classrooms is through reading. Not only does reading help kids explore Halloween themes during October but it also helps them dive deeper into literacy.

While there are many wonderful books to choose from during October we love the creepy story series by Aaron Reynolds. All three books in this series are perfect for bringing a bit of spookiness to your classroom. However, today we will explore how to teach Creepy Pair of Underwear using our Creepy Pair of Underwear Lesson Plans.

Creepy Pair of Undewear Book

Creepy pair of Underwear Book

Creepy Pair of Underwear is one of three books by Aaron Reynolds that follows Jasper, a young rabbit who always seems to find himself in creepy situations. In this book, Jasper finds himself getting creeped out by a pair of underwear.

This isn’t just any pair of underwear though – it is a cool new pair of glow in the dark underwear that Jasper can’t wait to buy. However, when he finally gets these glowing green underwear he quickly realizes that they are a bit too creepy for his comfort.

Once he is spooked, Jasper tries various methods to get rid of the eerie underwear but they just keep coming back. As Jasper continues to try and get rid of the underwear the story gets more and more hilarious.

The combination of humor and spookiness will have you and your students laughing together throughout the entire read. Once you are done with the first read, your kids will get a chance to dive deeper into the elements of the story using our read aloud activities.

Creepy Pair of Underwear Worksheets

When it comes to supporting first and second-graders with developing their reading skills there are several important things to cover. The best place to begin is always with text based comprehension questions.

Therefore, we have written several comprehension questions to use with your students while reading Creepy Pair of Underwear. These questions explore level one questions such as who is the story about as well as more complex questions such as,

  • What is Jasper’s point of view?
  • Why did the author repeat the words ghoulish, greenish glow many times?
  • What does the phrase, “He seized the underwear” mean? How do you know?
  • What does the plain black page tell the readers?

In addition to the comprehension questions, with our lesson plans you will be ready to teach the whole group response to text activities and worksheets for Creepy Pair of Underwear.

These response to text activities include story mapping, exploring points of view, and writing a summary. Here is a quick look at what these activities entail:

In addition to these response to text activities and worksheets, you will also find writing pages, vocabulary cards, and additional worksheets for the book Creepy Pair of Underwear.

Once you and your students have explored the book together you can have students demonstrate their individual understanding by using the Creepy Pair of Underwear Quiz we created.

Creepy Pair of Underwear Printables

All of the reading activities above can easily be uploaded into Google Slides or Easel on TPT. You can even use the self-checking digital tool on Easel by TPT to help save you time with grading.

While the digital format is excellent for ease and self-checking, we know that there is still a lot to be said for printables. Therefore, all of these read aloud activities can be downloaded and printed.

This gives you as the teacher the chance to decide what works best for your classroom and your students. You can even incorporate both digital and printables to add variety to your lesson plans if you choose.

Creepy Pair of Underwear Craft

In addition to the reading and writing activities, we have also included two different types of craft activities for this book. These two activities provide students with additional opportunities to demonstrate their understanding of the book.

The first creative activity in this read aloud is the retelling puppets. The retelling puppets are an excellent way to engage students in sharing what they have learned while also allowing them to engage in a creative activity.

To help prepare students to share by using the retelling puppets they will first complete the comprehension activities we shared above. This includes exploring the characters’ points of view.

After students have demonstrated an understanding of point of view they can cut out and color their retelling puppets. Then, using the puppets students can explain what happened in the story from the different perspectives of Jasper and the Underwear.

This method of learning is an excellent way to engage audio and visual learners. In addition, it provides a fun and effective way for all students to share what they have learned with their families when they go home.

Along with the retelling puppets we have also provided a template for a creepy pair of underwear. This Creepy Pair of Underwear template provides you with a fun culminating activity at the end of the week.

Aaron Reynolds Read Alouds
