Pig the Pug Series

One of our favorite book series for first and second-graders is Pig the Pug by Aaron Blabey. If you have read the first book, Pig the Pug, then you know why these books are so amazing!

This series follows the life of Pig, the most selfish pug there ever was. Pig lives with a family who has another dog – the adorable sausage dog Trevor.

Not only are these books laugh-out-loud funny, but they teach students truly important life lessons. Moreover, Pig teaches these lessons in ways that resonate with young children. Therefore, helping kids to connect with Pig and remember the lessons in their own lives.

Even though Pig the Pug may be the most selfish pug around, he is perfect for teaching elementary students the importance of sharing and telling the truth

Pig the Pug Read Aloud

If you have already read the original Pig the Pug book with your students then we encourage you to jump below to the read aloud for Pig the Elf, or the read aloud for Pig the Fibber. However, if this is your first time using any of the books from this series, keep on reading to learn about the wonderful resources we have ready for you to use with the original book.

Pig the Pug Lessons and Activities

While the original book is perfect as part of back to school read alouds it can be taught any time of year. It is great on its own or to add to a themed unit about sharing and kindness.

Using the detailed lesson plans that come in our Pig the Pug read aloud packet you will guide your students through a series of activities that help them understand the importance of sharing.

These Pig the Pug activities include comprehension questions, whole group response to text activities, response to text worksheets, writing pages, and vocabulary cards and worksheets. In addition to the several activities for helping students to fully comprehend the text, there are several follow-up activities.

Follow-up activities include a quiz, retelling puppets, and a cratfitvity.

How to Teach Pig the Pug as a Read Aloud

All of our read alouds are designed to be taught over several days. Therefore, when you purchase the Pig the Pug read aloud you will gain access to lessons that will cover 3-5 school days.

Moreover, this read aloud can be paired with other Pig the Pug books.  If you don’t get a chance to read the original book with your students at the beginning of the year, it is perfect to pair with Pig the Elf activities during the holidays.

In addition to introducing students to the character Pig, the original book is also great for introducing or reviewing read aloud routines. Since all of our read alouds follow a similar structure, your students will become more familiar with the activities and procedures each time you use one. Therefore, creating more independent learners with each book.

Pig the Elf Read Aloud

One of our favorite follow-up activities to Pig the Pug is Pig the Elf! Pig the Elf further explores the idea of selfishness in this holiday book that looks at how greediness can ruin the joy of Christmas.

Pig, just like most pups and people can’t wait for Christmas! However, it is not because of the opportunity to spend time with family or to give to others, but the opportunity to get lots and lots of presents!

He is so excited about getting presents, presents, presents, that Pig decides he will stay up all night long on Christmas Eve. However, just like he had to learn his lesson about being selfish by not sharing his toys with Trevor in the original book, there is a lesson waiting for her for him too.

Activities for Pig the Elf

Just like the activities in the read aloud for Pig the Pug, these Pig the Elf activities help students dive deeper into the book over the course of several days. Moreover, ending with similar follow-up activities to assess students’ understanding of the book.

While Pig the Elf is a Christmas book, the lesson it teaches about not being greedy is one that ALL students can benefit from. Therefore, even if you don’t want to do a full Christmas-themed unit this book is a fun addition to any winter theme activities for first and second grades.

Pig the Fibber Read Aloud

In addition to the selfishness and greed Pig displays in these two earlier books, Pig also struggles with telling the truth. In Pig the Fibber, our favorite pug finds himself constantly telling lies. Not only that, but when he gets caught in a lie he puts the blame on poor Trevor.

Just like the other Pig the Pug books, the lesson Pig learns about honesty in Pig the Fibber is another great life lesson to explore with young students. Moreover, it is a lesson that can be taught at any time of the year.

Reading Activities for Pig the Fibber

All of the activities in our Pig the FIbber read aloud packet follows the same structure as our other Pig the Pug reading activities:

  • Comprehension questions
  • Whole group response to text activities
  • Response to text worksheets
  • Writing pages
  • Vocabulary cards and worksheets
  • Quiz
  • Retelling puppets
  • Craftivity template

In addition, it also has a detailed lesson plan to help guide you through each activity for the week.

Pig the Pug Series Lesson Plans

There are a couple of different ways that you can teach the Pig the Pug series in your classroom.

One way to use these three books is to teach them as part of a unit. If you choose to teach it in that way, we suggest that you begin with the first book after Thanksgiving. Then, you can use one of the three books each week in December leading up to the winter break.

Since each of the read alouds provides enough lessons for 3 to 5 days, using the books in a series like these will give you enough read aloud activities for all of December.

Another option is to spread these out over the year. One way to do this is to begin the school year with Pig the Pug as a back to school read aloud. Then, read Pig the Elf in December to lead up to the holidays and winter break. When you return to school in the new year, you can read Pig the Fibber as part of a unit on honesty.

Whether you choose to teach these books back to back or spread them out, your students will love hearing the stories of Pig the Pug! Moreover, you will love having three weeks’ worth of lesson plans ready to teach!

We'd like to send you a free interactive read-aloud that is easy to use in either a print or digital format!
