3 Favorite St. Patrick’s Day Read Alouds

In no particular order, here are three of our students’ favorite read aloud stories for St. Patrick’s Day:

  1. How to Catch a Leprechaun, Adam Wallace– This story is written from the point of view of a leprechaun. The students enjoy the ‘Where’s Waldo’ type of fun as they try to find the leprechaun on every page. This read aloud is also a great text to jumpstart your leprechaun trap STEM activities.
  2. The Night Before St. Patrick’s Day, Natasha Wing– This cute tale is a spin-off of ‘T’was the Night before Christmas’ where the characters make a plan to work together to trap a leprechaun. It also has a few St. Patrick day traditions sprinkled throughout the book.
  3. The Luckiest St. Patrick’s Day Ever, Teddy Slater- this story also highlights St. Patrick’s Day traditions in rhyme form. This story is a great one to help your students practice the skill of sequencing events.

During the month of March we use our read-aloud time to read all of our favorite books about St. Patrick’s day. Students always enjoy books about Leprechauns! As teachers, our favorite seasonal read-aloud book is, How to Catch a Leprechaun. We love this book because it lends itself perfectly to STEM activities and cute bulletin board ideas. This eye-catching St. Patrick’s Day bulletin board featured in the image above stemmed from this story. Click here to grab these St. Patrick’s Day  templates for your bulletin board.

Leprechaun Trap stem challenge activity

After reading How to Catch a Leprechaun,  or another seasonal story about St. Patrick’s Day, the students are always anxious to explore ways they could catch a leprechaun. We prefer to use the engineering design process as a STEM challenge for students to construct a trap that can catch and hold a leprechaun.  Download FREE Leprechaun trap recording sheets for your STEM challenge engineering activity.
