Pig the Pug Companion for Prek

Pig the Pug has been one of our favorite book series for years! We were first introduced to this book series by Aaron Blabey when we were teaching first and second grade. It quickly became one of our favorite book series to use for read alouds in the classroom.

With proven success from years of sharing this book series with elementary school students, we decided to test it out with preschool kids. Guess what? They loved it just as much!

Knowing how much our preschoolers love Pig the Pug and how much our teachers love our prek read aloud companions, we knew we had to make a Pig the Pug Companion for Prek.

Pig the Pug Preschool Activities

Whether your students love pugs or have another favorite type of dog they will love reading about the adventures of Pig the Pug. Moreover, you will love the lessons your kids can learn from this book series.

Aaron Blabey created a wonderful series that not only brings laughter to the classroom but teaches students important lessons. Through this series, your kids will have opportunities to learn about kindness, friendship, and sharing.

While there are several books in the Pig the Pug book series we selected three of our favorite books to read with preschoolers:

These three books cover some of the important lessons we mentioned above. Beyond introducing your kids to these lessons during storytime, we created interactive read aloud activities to help them further explore these lessons in addition to important literacy skills.

Preschool Read Aloud Activities

Each read aloud is designed with the individual book in mind. However, while the preschool activities align with each book, the format of each read aloud is the same for all three books.

Therefore, the more often you use this read aloud format the more familiar your kids become to using them. This allows each student to focus more on reading and comprehension since they already know what types of activities to expect.

Here is a quick overview of what activities are included in each PreK read aloud:

  • Detailed lesson plans
  • Comprehension questions
  • Whole group response to text activities
  • Response to text worksheets
  • Writing pages
  • Vocabulary cards and worksheets
  • Quiz
  • Retelling puppets
  • Craftivity template

As mentioned above, each book follows this same read aloud format, but the activities are specific to each book. Keep reading to see some of the specific activities we designed for each individual book.

Pig the Pug Read Aloud: PreK

As the main title of the series, this is a great book to use early in the school year. By reading this book early in the year your kids get acquainted with both Pig the Pug and read aloud activities

In the title book of this series, your kids will meet Pig. Pig is a greedy and selfish dog that doesn’t want to share his toys. However, over the course of book he learns a valuable lesson with the help of Trevor, the good-hearted weiner dog.

During initial storytime, the children will love getting to know Pig and Trevor through the words and illustrations. Following the first read-through, they will get time to revisit these characters several times during different activities.

These activities can be taught over the course of several class periods. This gives the children several opportunities to revisit the book and dive deeper into the story.

PreK Read Aloud: Pig the Fibber

Pig the Fibber is one of the follow-up books in this series. It follows Pig the Pug on a new adventure where he learns an important lesson about honesty.

Like the original book, this book is fun and engaging for preschoolers. It also has delightful illustrations to help students visualize the story. This book can be taught at any time of year.

As with the read aloud for Pig the Pug, this read aloud comes complete with several preschool reading activities. These literacy activities can be presented to your students in a digital format or as printables (just like all of our read aloud resources).

Since it follows the same format as the original Pig the Pug read aloud for PreK, your students will already be familiar with the types of activities they will need to complete. The only difference is that the questions and details follow the plot of Pig the Fibber.

PreK Read Aloud Book: Pig the Elf

As you can assume by the name, Pig the Elf is a great book to teach during the holidays. It can be used as part of a Christmas-themed unit or on its own.

While it is a fun holiday-themed story, just like the other books, it continues to teach an important lesson to children. This book returns to the key character trait that Pig is known for – greediness.

Whether your students celebrate Christmas or another holiday, they will be able to make connections to Pig being excited about receiving presents. This connection will further support their engagement with the text which will further support their literacy development.

Read Alouds for Pig the Pug Book Series

As young readers, your preschoolers will love engaging with a silly character like Pig. While they may giggle at his antics, they will also be able to learn about kindness, friendship, and many other important lessons.

In addition to the lessons presented in each book, your students will get a chance to further develop their literacy skills every time they engage with the text. These literacy skills will not only help them become better readers but will also help them develop their own love for reading at a young age.

Since we love using all three books together throughout the year, we have bundled them at a discounted price. However, we know every classroom is different.

So, you can also pick and choose each individual read aloud that is best for your preschoolers. Whatever you choose, we know that you and your students will love Pig the Pug as much as we do!
